Can something so simple as reading a book possibly cure depression? Studies testing the effectiveness of CBT self-help books as a stand-alone treatment say: YES. Trials show that people get less depressed after reading one and a three-year follow-up indicates the benefits are long-lasting. In the UK, securing an appointment with an NHS therapist can take up to two years. Why wait? For people mildly-moderately depressed, working through the exercises in this book can be a reasonable alternative to psychotherapy.

I have just finished reading this book and it is a great read. I have read a few books on the subject of CBT and this one is by far the best. This book is exactly what it says it is, "a tool kit with all the essentials you need to use CBT successfully". It is very well written and easy to understand. It breaks CBT down into manageable chunks so that you can work through the book at your own speed.

Sara Pascoe takes the "scary" out of dealing with mental illness. Her easy to understand explanations of how the brain functions and step by step instructions for wellness are backed by research references, without once slowing down the pace of the book. Best of all, Pascoe offers reassurance and hope, rare and valuable commodities for people coping with their own or a family member's mental illness. A truly empowering tool, and indeed, an Essential Guide.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, the Essential Guide is a reader friendly introduction to the discipline combined with exercises geared to its application. The book is engaging because Dr. Pascoe keeps it interesting. When describing the principles of cognitive behavioural therapy, she provides insights into the lives of the luminaries who advanced the field. Then, she walks the reader through a series of exercises and surveys that make the reader focus on his or herself, personal goals, and the thoughts and behaviors that either get in the way or advance well being. Unlike many self-help books that grow old as soon as the next cycle of jargon is embraced, the principles described by Dr. Pascoe aren't tied up in catchy words. In that way, Dr. Pascoes's book is particularly refreshing. The value is in the exercises themselves and the time the reader puts into completing them and practicing them. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, the Essential Guide delivers on the title.
