One in five people suffer from a lack of sleep in the UK, the Sleep Council have organised National Bed Month throughout March to promote good sleep practice and help us all get a good night’s sleep.

If you struggle to drop off, try some of the following tips to see if there is any improvement:

Create a bedtime routine to help your body prepare for sleep, make sure you do something relaxing for one hour before going to bed. Try not to watch television, check emails, do housework or exercise too close to going to bed as these are all stimulating activities.

Have a bath, this helps your body prepare as it will cause your body temperature to lower before bed which will help you to drop off. However, it’s important not to have a bath immediately before going to bed, the body needs a bit of time to regulate its temperature before bed.

Ask your partner to give you a massage before bed, or use self-massage techniques. This will relax the body and promote good sleep.

Exercising in the early evening can help you sleep, the body’s temperature will rise as a result of exercising and then regulate itself, this will lead to a lowering of body temperature just before bedtime.

Caffeine should be avoided from mid-afternoon as it can have a stimulating effect for up to 12 hours.

Try having a glass of milk around bedtime it contains calcium which soothes the nerves and promotes relaxation.

If you can’t sleep don’t lie in bed worrying about not sleeping – get up and do something non-stimulating and return to bed when you feel tired.

Visit www.sleepcouncil.com for more information on good sleep, buying a new bed and national bed month.

This week sees the publication of Anger Management – The Essential Guide (available from Need2Know), anger is a universal problem and in the UK more than one in 10 people say they have trouble controlling their own anger. The Boiling Point report by the Mental Health Foundation also found that:

One in five people say they have ended a relationship or friendship with someone because of how they behaved when they were angry.

58% of people wouldn’t know where to seek help with an anger problem.

You should see your GP if you feel you have anger management issues, they may be able to suggest the right treatment for you and your circumstances. Treatments range from anger management classes, cognitive behavioural therapy to neurolinguistic programming and hypnotherapy.

However, if your anger management issues are not encroaching on your personal and professional life to the extent where you feel you need professional help, there are several DIY ways of coping with your anger on a day-to-day basis, some of which are listed below:

Exercising regularly – physical activity releases the ‘feel-good’ hormones we desperately need to feel happy about ourselves and others. Whether you take a regular exercise class, join a salsa dance group or simply go for a regular stroll in your neighbourhood, it’s all beneficial.

Eating properly – don’t underestimate the importance of having a healthy diet. Having a sugar high – and then a sugar low – can play an enormous role in many people’s moods.

Keeping a diary – writing isn’t for everyone, but many people find it an extremely cathartic way of getting their feelings under control. Keeping track of your moods can also help you pinpoint when you get angry and why, and hopefully stave off outbursts or bad feelings in future.

Talking to a friend – having someone who understands you well is a gift, and if you have one, why not take advantage of him or her? Often having someone there who really listens and understands is all you’ll need to put things into perspective.

Listening to music – calming music has been shown to slow down your heart rate and therefore help your entire body to relax.

Last month saw the government launching their ‘Why let drink decide?’ campaign to raise awareness of the potential consequences of drinking alcohol. It also encourages parents and adults to talk opening with children about alcohol, the effects of alcohol and issues surrounding it.

Three quarters of 11 to 15 year-olds say they would like parents to discuss alcohol with them, it is thought that children would understand the risks of alcohol better if the information was made available to them before they begin experimenting. There are many health risks associated with drinking alcohol, the most well known being liver disease, cancers of the mouth, liver and breast, depression, anxiety and infertility. There is also the more immediate consequence of putting your personal safety at risk by having one night stands, losing your belongings and not remembering the night when you wake up in the morning. The government’s advice for teens is:

Don’t drink alcohol before you’re 15 – it can interfere with the way your body develops.

The healthiest option is to stay alcohol-free until you’re 18.

If you’re drinking make sure there’s a responsible adult present.

Only drink every now and again – and certainly don’t do it more than once a week.

Never consume more than the recommended daily number of units for adults (which is 3–4 units a day for men and 2–3 units a day for women).

The school food trust has just released information that three quarters of school children are now taking vegetables or salad as part of their average school lunch.

This is good news as it means the numbers of children eating two of their five-a-day at school have risen from 59% to 74%. The overall amount of food being left on the children’s plates hasn’t increased, this shows that the vegetables and salad being taken are actually being eaten, children are also drinking a lot more water with their lunchtime meal.

The ideal proportions we should all be eating of the different food groups are as follows:

33% fruit and vegetables – as many different colours of these as possible.

33% bread, rice, potatoes, pasta and other starchy foods.

15% milk and dairy foods.

12% meat, fish, eggs, beans and other non-dairy sources of protein.

8% foods and drinks high in fat and/or sugar.

Friday 5 February 2010 sees the Samaritans organising Stress Down Day, this awareness day is designed to raise money so they can continue to answer calls from people in need of emotional support.

Stress is something that affects all of us at some point, a range of problems can cause stress in a person and one of the most common is work-related stress. The UK has the longest working hours in Europe, 1 in 6 of us work more than 60 hours a week and 29% of employees with high stress levels work more than 10 hours longer than they are contracted to do. So how do you achieve the right work–life balance?

Frances Ive’s book Stress – The Essential Guide has the following advice:

Try to avoid working late every day, even if it is company culture.

Don’t believe you’re indispensable and if you’re worried about something it is better to ask than to do it incorrectly or ignore it altogether.

Take your lunch breaks! Get out of the workplace, go for a walk, have something to eat or meet a friend so that you can switch off for a while.

Find out who the best person is to discuss problems with, or ask if your can be moved into a different department if colleagues are difficult to work with.

Be honest with yourself – if you’re always stressed in every job your do, perhaps there is a pattern developing due to your own way of doing things. It may not be the fault of your job.

Stress – The Essential Guide is available for £8.99 from Need2Know books.

Each year, over 12 million people receive a cancer diagnosis and 7.6 million die of the disease. Cancer is a preventable disease and to raise awareness and encourage Thursday 4 February 2010 is World Cancer Day. The UICC (International Union Against Cancer) want to focus on the things we can all do to prevent cancer:

Stop tobacco use and avoid exposure to second-hand smoke.

Limit alcohol consumption.

Avoid excessive sun exposure.

Maintain a healthy weight, through eating healthily and exercising regularly.

Protect against cancer-causing infections.

Here at Need2Know we are getting ready to publish Cervical Cancer – The Essential Guide, the author Mary Lunnen is a survivor of cervical cancer and urges people to attend their cervical screening appointments:

‘If my cancer had not been detected quite early through a routine cervical screening appointment, who knows what would have happened, it could have saved my life. Please do not miss your regular appointments, they are so important.’

Need2Know are also working on several cancer titles for 2010 and 2011, details of Breast Cancer – The Essential Guide, Prostate Cancer – The Essential Guide and Skin Cancer and Sun Safety – The Essential Guide. We have plans to expand this range of titles in the hope that raising awareness of these preventable diseases will help in the fight against cancer.
