World Cancer Day

Each year, over 12 million people receive a cancer diagnosis and 7.6 million die of the disease. Cancer is a preventable disease and to raise awareness and encourage Thursday 4 February 2010 is World Cancer Day. The UICC (International Union Against Cancer) want to focus on the things we can all do to prevent cancer:

  • Stop tobacco use and avoid exposure to second-hand smoke.
  • Limit alcohol consumption.
  • Avoid excessive sun exposure.
  • Maintain a healthy weight, through eating healthily and exercising regularly.
  • Protect against cancer-causing infections.

Here at Need2Know we are getting ready to publish Cervical Cancer – The Essential Guide, the author Mary Lunnen is a survivor of cervical cancer and urges people to attend their cervical screening appointments:

‘If my cancer had not been detected quite early through a routine cervical screening appointment, who knows what would have happened, it could have saved my life. Please do not miss your regular appointments, they are so important.’

Need2Know are also working on several cancer titles for 2010 and 2011, details of Breast Cancer – The Essential Guide, Prostate Cancer – The Essential Guide and Skin Cancer and Sun Safety – The Essential Guide. We have plans to expand this range of titles in the hope that raising awareness of these preventable diseases will help in the fight against cancer.
