Diabetes Awareness Week

Diabetes Awareness Week
12th – 18th June 2011
Diabetes Awareness Week has grown to become a globally-celebrated event which involves hundreds of campaigns, activities, lectures and meetings with the aim of spreading the message about diabetes. The theme for the 2011 Diabetes Awareness Week will centre on talking about your own experiences of living with the disease and taking a more personal approach to looking at the aspects of diabetes.
Diabetes Awareness Week was set up by Diabetes UK, initially as a week of intensive fundraising. It is now the annual focal point for the charity’s fundraising, awareness and campaigning activities.
An estimated 285 million people lived with diabetes last year and this number is expected to grow to 438 million by 2030. 70% of the current cases of diabetes occur in low and middle income countries; India has the world's largest diabetes population with an estimated 50.8 million sufferers and China follows closely behind with 43.2 million.
Diabetes is one of the major causes of premature illness and death worldwide however, in developing countries less than half of people with diabetes are actually diagnosed. Type 2 diabetes is responsible for 85-95% of all cases although this can often remain undetected for many years.
Get involved!
9th-12th June - London to Paris Cycle Challenge
A 234 miles, two wheeled tour taking place over three days and through two countries.
18th-19th June - Great North Swim
Raise money for Diabetes UK North West in the Great North Swim taking place in Lake Windermere.
Unless addressed, the mortality and disease burden from diabetes will continue to increase. Through awareness weeks such as this, diabetes’ organisations aim to increase awareness and encourage people to get involved in fund-raising activities. All money will go to diabetes’ charities as they work towards finding a cure for this disease.
