What Clothing to Wear to Protect You From the Sun

Although it may seem natural to want to wear less clothing when it’s really hot outside, in order to protect your skin, taking care with what you wear and covering up can help. This is especially the case if there isn’t any shade available.

Clothing to protect you from the sun

Clothing made from materials with a close weave will help block out most of the UV rays. If you’re not sure if it’s a close weave material, then try holding the item of clothing up to the light and see how much light can get through – if it doesn’t allow much light, then it’s a good, close weave.

If you’re on a beach or near a pool, then be aware that the protection of clothing, particularly of cotton, can be affected by water. For example, a wet item of clothing, such as a shirt, may offer less protection than a dry shirt.

Hats for protection from the sun

Hats, especially wide-brimmed varieties, are an excellent way of keeping your head, face, neck and ears protected – and with such a wide array of hats available these days, you can choose something to match your taste!

Sunglasses for protection from the sun

Sunglasses, too, are a big fashion statement and they help protect your eyes. To get the most protection from sunglasses, look out for products that have a ‘UV 400’ label and specifically say that they offer 100% UV protection. It’s also advisable to look out for the CE Mark on them and the British Standard BS EN 1836:1997. Sunglasses that wrap around the side of the face will offer the maximum protection.
