Monday 14th November 2011 sees World Diabetes Day taking place. This year the slogan of the awareness day is Act On Diabetes. Now.

Thanks to your efforts, in 2010 over 900 monuments and buildings in 84 countries were lit in blue on 14 November to raise awareness of diabetes and World Diabetes Day. As a result of the continued popularity of this initiative, it will continue to be a core component of the World Diabetes Day campaign this year. People are once again encouraged to use the colour blue as the centre for all World Diabetes Day-related activities and events, strengthening recognition of the Blue Circle as the global symbol of diabetes.

Five key points have been developed for the 2011 campaign:

  • Diabetes kills: 1 person every 8 seconds, 4 million people a year
  • Diabetes doesn't discriminate: all ages, rich and poor, all countries.
  • Diabetes can no longer be ignored: 4 million lives lost a year,1 million amputations a year, millions lost in income and productivity
  • Life-saving care, a right not a privilege: education, medicines, technologies
  • Choose Health: demand healthy food and environments, keep active, eat well. You can make a difference.
