Finding a partner in life today is fraught with difficulties, but when you consider all the sexual risks too, then the stakes are raised even higher.
This guide to sexually transmitted infections is one way to make sure you are fully armed with the knowledge you need. It clearly explains all the infections you can be at risk from, their symptoms and treatments, and what you can do to prevent infection.
Each chapter covers a different STI – from chlamydia and gonorrhoea symptoms to HIV, AIDS and hepatitis A, B and C. Find out what chlamydia (often misspelled as clamydia or clamidia) is, how chlamydia can be prevented and how it will be treated. The chapter on syphilis explains the symptoms of syphilis, as well as its effects on the body and the treatments available. Get clued up with the facts about gonorrhoea, genital herpes and genital warts – symptoms, prevention, testing and pregnancy – it’s all covered.
Besides the different sexually transmitted infections, this book also looks at other important STI/STD issues. A chapter is given to genitourinary (GU) clinics, covering how you can find one and what happens there. Alcohol abuse and its effect on the rising numbers of people with different STIs is also covered, as is correct condom use and what you need to remember when meeting someone new.
Advice is also included within each chapter on talking to teenagers about STIs, whether that teenager is your child or pupil.
If you want to protect yourself against STIs, learn more about a condition you have, or just want to talk frankly about how these issues are dealt with, then this is the book for you.
Information for teachers and parents talking to teenagers about this topic is included in each chapter.
'An informative read.', ‘Heaton-Harris offers sound advice.', 'The author has achieved her goal in making the book accessible by all.' InSite, Online Youth Media Magazine
'After reading this myself I left it lying around for my teenager to read too as I felt it was appropriate. (just in case). The book explains each disease , how it affects you, how you are tested - which is actually quite interesting and not something I had considered. Treatment and how you can protect yourself. The summing up section is also really good. The book discusses what affects this could have if you are pregnant and what effects it can have on the baby. I found the section on what happens at a GU clinic interesting as I imagined all sorts of things about it. All in all I found this a very interesting and informative book.' Totz2teens.co.uk
