In Great Britain there are so many places where you can go to enjoy nature, the environment, the tranquility and at the same time get some exercise. Some people prefer gentle walks to really take in the details of the natural environment, others prefer challenging hikes through rugged terrain, whichever you prefer this book will provide comprehensive coverage of all the relevant issues.
The book will have information on preparation, equipment and what to bring, planning your route, using maps and guides, walking with children, responsible walking, advice on how to observe rights of way and rules concerning dogs. There is also information on choosing the right landscape and terrain for your fitness and experience levels. Everything a novice walker will need to get started.
Once you have progressed and are a little more experienced, the book provides information on hill walking, using specialist hiking equipment, avoiding injury and where the best walks in Britain can be found. There is also a section for those who are after some adventure, with information on mountain hikes, long distance trails, backpacking and wild camping!
Expert/Press Reviews for Walking - A Beginner's Guide
I received a copy of this book by James Carron for review.  I found it entertaining, easy to read and pitched at just the right level for all (young or old) who have decided to take up walking as a hobby.
The introductory chapters give persuasive reasons for taking up walking, ideas on getting started and useful hints for those with health problems. Concise advice on boots, clothing, rucksacks, basic equipment and food and drink is collected together in an easily read style. Places to walk, walking with children (I got a few ideas on walking with my grandchildren), choosing maps and guidebooks and estimating walk times are all covered. Walking-A Beginner’s Guide is a book which we could well recommend to new members. Mid-Ulster Walking Club www.midulsterwalkingclub.org.uk

'Walking a Beginners Guide by James Carron is a useful guide for those walkers who have gained a higher level of fitness and want to increase the amount of walking they do as well as exploring other areas of the country. The safety and first aid chapters are a good reminder of the steps you need to take to stay safe while out walking, while the maps provide inspiration for longer walks across Britain. 1. Full of really useful advice

    Posted by wildrover220 on 19th Nov 2010

As a novice walker looking to expand my skills, I have been searching high and low for a really useful and readable beginner's guide to walking, something that has all the basics covered. This book answered my prayers. It may not be the most glossy publication but it contains really useful info and is written in such a way that is friendly and helpful (a bit like asking a friend for advice!). The text is also nicely broken up with headings and sub-headings which makes navigating its pages very easy. Thanks to the advice on gear, map reading, navigation, etc, and the detailed route guides, it has given me the confidence to do more walking and to tackle longer routes. Highly recommended!
